Located on the corner of Kettner Blvd. and West Juniper Street in Little Italy, at 2266 Kettner Blvd., San Diego, CA 92101, The Crack Shack is a chicken and egg restaurant worth trying. Map The chicken and eggs are fresh and sourced from free-range chickens. The lines can be long, but the service is speedy so the wait isn’t bad.
You order at the counter and are given a table number to place on your table in the outdoor patio seating area. It’s best to have someone wait in line to order and have someone else scope out the seating situation and grab an available table.
There’s a good selection of sandwiches, fried chicken, slaw, salads, and other items.
The 5 pieces of Fried Chicken, Border Slaw and Mini Biscuits was more than plenty for two people.
The 6 perfectly baked Mini Biscuits are served with a delicious miso maple butter. The butter has just a hint of the maple so it’s slightly sweet, but not too sweet.
The Border Slaw is made of papaya, mango, jicama, coconut, chili and pineapple. It has the right amount of sweetness, coolness and spice.
The fried chicken was incredible. It’s seasoned coating was crispy and the chicken was tender and moist.
The chicken paired well with the selection of dipping sauces. There were six sauces to try. There’s Baja Hot Sauce, Buttermilk Ranch, Chimichurri, Cracksup, Kimchi BBQ and Vadouvan Mustard.
Check out the “Chickens Crossing the San Diego Road” mural, a spoof on the Beatles’ “Abbey Road” album cover, located in the back of the restaurant.
And of course, you can’t miss the giant chicken statue.
